Sencillo pero eficaz

Fuel tank - lid, lock ring, sender unit - removal tool (wrench) whatever terminology you prefer, this is a good one. I was having trouble loosening the plastic lock ring on a VW Golf 3. I had tried with a club hammer and pieces of wood, a large flat screwdriver, a chisel. It would not budge a mm and I did not want to damage it. So I checked on the web and found lots of tools claiming to do the job. All were more expensive, many were very highly priced. This was the cheapest. There are kits, ring shaped tools, three legged tools and more. I chose this one on price, because it looked strong and had some good reviews. I ordered it on Friday. it was delivered on the next Monday. As expected, it was strongly built. However, there was a slight problem. If the leg bolts are tightened to maximum, they do not lock the legs to the bar and the legs still moved. I overcame this issue by fitting a large metal washer between each leg and the bar. Then the legs could be locked tightly in place, Then the device was adjusted to fit my lock ring and a torque wrench attached. With minimal force the ring moved first time. This device is so simple. But then so often the best ideas are. For under £9 including free postage, this wrench is a real bargain.

It did the job just fine, using 1/2" drive. A lot of force was needed to remove the lid because someone had over tighened the lid and the o-ring had started leaking. The tool took the abuse no problem. Putting everything back, I only used my hand on the tool instead of the 1/2 drive and it was perfect- job done. The 3 legged type would not have fitted in this case. This tool can be seated on the outside of the ring with a leg on either side spanning the entire ring. In my case I had the legs closer togather and the knotches fitted onto the ridges on the top of the ring - this worked too and it was useful as there is little clearance around the ring to fit it as intended. I have done this job before without the tool - my advice is to save the skin on your hands, avoid the cuts from the metal edges around the tank, and save 3 hrs - get the tool.Car was a Citreon c4 HDI, but I think virtually all Citroens, Peugeots etc have the same fittings, My 1999 Xantia did.
